A light-hearted choral carol for Christmas, composed for the 2025 Christmas Carol Service at St Stephen’s Church, Canterbury.
Description
This was specially composed for the Carol Service at St Stephen’s Church, Canterbury in 2025. The words were written by Michael Butler, a Bass in the choir. The musical style is quite light-hearted, and isn’t intended to be taken too seriously – simply enjoy that feeling of Christmas excitement!

Lyrics
- The new birth of a baby boy,
A star hanging high above;
Just imagine his mother’s joy —
A triumph of eternal love! - The family in a stable bare:
Their future seems to be set fair;
Angels and shepherds come and go —
Not the normal human flow! - In Bethlehem townstead night turned into day,
The animals simply went on their way.
“We must plan the journey.” Joseph said;
“When we are strong.” came from Mary’s bed. - The child bellowed and wanted his say;
Tossed and turned in a box of hay.
Christus natus ex Maria Virgine!
The very first Christmas Day!
Michael Butler, 2025
